Plot details to Independence Day sequels revealed

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin were confident enough to reveal a fairly large amount of information regarding the two Independence Day sequels currently in the works, despite the fact that they're still awaiting a green light from 20th Century Fox.

Currently titled ID Forever Part I & II respectively Emmerich answered one of the biggest uncertainties regarding the plot; whether the story would continue immediately after the events of Independence Day, or 20 years later:

“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

Emmerich goes on to say that although it will be set in our present time, it will definitely have a futuristic feel to it; more of a "what if" scenario of what happened to our history when we discovered alien technology in the 90's. It seems that in using there technology humanity will be ready and waiting, unlike before:

“It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an anti-gravity device and put it in a human airplane. We've rebuilt. But [the aliens] also do different things.

It's unclear whether Will Smith will return, with Emmerich implying that the story will focus on characters who would have been children during the first invasion:

“It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

This may indicate that the two child stars from the original Dylan Dubrow (Ross Bagley) and Patricia Whitmore (Mae Whitman) may return as adults. Though it is anyone's guess at this point as to who will play them. Bill Pullman has confirmed his involvement in the project, pending on the green light:

“Nobody’s holding their breath because the sequels have been continually plagued.”

If they make it past the developmental hell stage I think letting this information out is a great move to drum up hype for the possible sequels. Emmerich hasn't had a film as successful as the 1996 original to date, but both he and Dean Devlin have stated that a creative interest in continuing the story is the driving force behind the sequels rather then squeezing what's left out of the Independence Day name. I was never the biggest Independence day fan (Will Smith just can't have the best overhand right in the universe, that title is reserved for Ivan Drago) but the ideas for these sequels are certainly intriguing. It may be that 20th Century Fox is waiting to see the numbers for Emmerich's latest film White House Down before giving the go ahead to ID Forever Part I & II.
